A dream finds a home, a building finds renewed purpose.
In Kohala, we feel strongly about our kuleana (responsibility) to conserve the heritage that we, as Kohala residents, have inherited from the Kohala of the past. Kohala also knows that heritage is not created overnight. Heritage is fostered, vested, and inherited over generations.
As KHC is settling into our new home, we need the support of our community near and far to complete our heritage center. There are many ways to become involved and support the Kohala Heritage Center now and in the future. Learn more about our three-year plan. Come and join us, the Kohala Heritage Center, in our work to conserve, create, and celebrate Kohala's Heritage.
Kohala Heritage Center Programs
Heritage Exhibits
Our Kohala Heritage Exhibit Hui will work with our community to develop exhibits that share Kohala's history through a mix of video, still images, and heritage items on display. This exhibit space will occupy approximately half of our public area adjacent to our mission-related gifts and ADA-accessible restrooms.
Kohala Oral History Project
The Kohala Heritage Center will showcase exhibits highlighting Kohala's rich history and culture and facilitate the collection of valuable community narratives. In partnership with the Kohala Oral History Project, local students engaged in oral history documentation and filmmaking will have a dedicated space within the Center to create, edit, and present high-quality documentary films. These stories and interviews will enhance the Center's exhibit programming.
Hawaiian Reading Library
The Kohala Center has created a space for learning about our history through the books created over time. Our reading library will occupy a corner of our public space and provide hundreds of beautiful books for the pleasure of our community and visitors. Find a book and a comfy chair and learn more about North Kohala.
Media Studio
Space will be devoted to a media studio available for community projects requiring creative technology tools. An iMac workstation and software for creative pursuits are planned to facilitate the dream of connecting the local community to state-of-the-art tools used extensively in creating content for telling historically significant stories.
